[01/11/2008]  I actually fought making this purchase for our business for longer than I should have. I thought to myself - why can't my employees just process the orders without making costly mistakes? Why should I be required to invest nearly two grand for a bar code package (including SmartScan Invoice Verification program, the Dolphin 7600 Mobile Computer, Label Link bar code labeling software, and a label printer)? After all, shouldn't my staff be competent enough to do their job without making mistakes? Yeah right. Okay, now let's get real. When our staff starts rushing and they’re under pressure to get the last orders of the day out before the UPS truck arrives it seemed that shipping mistakes were simply an inevitable part of doing business.

The reality is that we were making an average of 2 or 3 shipping related mistakes every single week. That may not sound like a lot, but let me break that down. An average package sells for $100. And when we ship the wrong item, we normally let the customer keep the "wrong" item, and then we RUSH ship them the correct item. So we’ve now sent an extra $100 item for free plus we've provided a minimum of $50 in expedited shipping. On an average week, we could easily burn through $300 - $500 worth of LOST revenue. And that doesn't even begin to take into consideration the disappointment factor that our customers would experience when they were subjected to a shipping error. Needless to say, shipping errors were costing us dearly.

So after looking at every alternative I could find on Google and the QuickBooks website, I went ahead and purchased the SmartScan Invoice Verification program, the Dolphin 7600 Mobile Computer, Label Link bar code labeling software, and a label printer. I was simply hoping that we could reduce our losses caused by shipping errors. Let me tell you it worked! We didn't just "reduce" our losses, we ELIMINATED them altogether! In the two months of using the system we have had just 1 (that's right one) shipping error. Someone goofed up (hey we’re only human). Compared with 2 or 3 shipping errors every single week before - I'll take it!

Now let's talk about the system. I was concerned that the software would be "unpolished" or "clunky". I was worried that my staff might reject working with a new process. Well my fears were unfounded. The software is simple to work with and it does the job perfectly. The Pocket PC device is awesome. Our shipping person downloads the invoices from QuickBooks and heads to the warehouse. As the items are picked from the warehouse, the Pocket PC beeps and confirms that the correct item has been scanned. It's impossible to scan the wrong item, or too many items, or too few items. Every order goes out the door perfect! My staff loves it, and more importantly I love it.

Dealing with the staff at Baus Systems has been a pleasure too. They are a smallish company (like me). And it's obvious that they care about their customers (like me). Every call or request for anything has been addressed promptly and efficiently! They have been very attentive to make certain that we’re completely happy with their product.

As I mentioned, I was reluctant to spend the money on this system. That was foolish of me. In the end, this system didn’t cost me 2 grand, it will honestly SAVE me somewhere around $20 grand this year alone. I am sincerely appreciative for what SmartScan is enabling my business to accomplish. This review is a testimonial from a businessman who is pleased beyond words to have found a way to fix a problem that had been costing me money and driving me crazy.
