[08/14/2008]  I purchased BQ for a small engineering firm of 15 people. We purchased BQ to integrate with QuickBooks and provide a web based solution for entering time and expense. After 1 year of use, the time portion works great, but the expense portion is cumbersome, and labor intensive for downloading into QuickBooks. Expense sheets aren't saved when the employee enters the information. The web based software is testy and gives errors if you spend too long on one expense entry. We've had to go back to using spreadsheets and downloading the spreadsheets into QuickBooks. Also, the two programs were supposed to be able to sync whenever a change was made in one of the programs but this caused so many errors, we had to turn this feature off. I don't recommend this program to be used with QuickBooks.

Where a list of values should have been implemented, BQ tried to implement some sort of Ajax control which worked poorly. After 1 week of use, we returned back to our old system. We're considering just building our own. BQ would not refund the purchase price.

Good... Except for lots of small things...

[12/26/2007]  I liked BillQuick, and wanted to keep liking them, but we are having to move off after a year of working through issues. We have a complex setup in one state - some items and services are taxable, others are not. Luckily, there was not much business in that state at the start, but the issues never got better and we are to the point we spend as much time billing two customers as we spend on another twenty. In addition, BillQuick was not really designed for QuickBooks - it does not pass sales tax into QuickBooks in the 'sales tax' slot or 'tag' line items as taxable or not -- instead, it puts a Line Item of 'Service Tax' or 'Expense Tax' in, and marks everything "NonTaxable". This will not work with the Sales Tax reporting in QuickBooks. BillQuick never had a method to indicate a particular line item was taxable or not - their logic was pretty much 'whole project is/is not' and that won't work for us. And they don't really have a way to fix this issue quickly, so if you have complex sales tax, this product will likely give you heartache as well for at least another year, if they ever choose to fix it. We also had some issues with the interface, although minor, that caused rates to zero out if more than one timer was open. Also, if we typed too quickly, the the 'predictor' would choose the wrong item. And the navigation within a text field that was within a grid is next to impossible, as you cannot use the arrow keys to navigate within the text (it moves you to the next cell!) - you have to be a VERY accurate clicker to get to JUST the right place to do your edits! A number of small issues added to the major sales tax problem leads us to leave BillQuick. If you have a fairly simple client base and don't have a mish-mash of sales tax rules, the product is VERY nice - I found it accurately moved data to and from QuickBooks (except for sales tax!) and was quite nice to use - a beautiful, modern-looking interface. But all the issues piled up become not-sosmall issues if they double the time you spend doing the back-end work!

BQ enabled us to save about 10 hours a week, roughly around $162, which ends up being over $8,000 per year in savings. Also, our previous solution lacked sophistication causing us to do a lot of duplicate data entry each month to prepare client invoices the way we wanted them. BQ has enabled us to be more efficient and to get our billing done in half the time. [07/08/2007]  BQ does not live up to its claims. BQ accesses date very slowly, when we complained to BQ, they said it was our network and we would have to upgrade. We did upgrade but no improvement. They also claim you can group projects but you can't do anything with the groups. After many long hours of trying to get this program to do what they claimed, it comes down to this. BQ designed this program for one company (my opinion) and then decided to sell to everyone else. The hundreds of reports only work if you set up your company like the original company. I like the idea of BQ but their performance is nonexistent.

We have tried several time-keeping software products, but have always run into the problem of duplicating entries to keep our GL and time-keeping software balanced. [08/29/2006]  We bought BQ this spring. I was formerly a partner at an engineering firm that used Wind2. When I left to start my own company, I bought QuickBooks. QuickBooks is great, and straightforward, for standard accounting. Plus, accountants are familiar with it and can work directly with our files. But it doesn't do much in the way of project management functions. We looked at Deltek, Wind2, etc., and ultimately decided to go with a project management companion to QuickBooks. We settled on BQ. BQ is nearly fully operational for us, and appears that it will be a good and useful tool. Our goal was to find something that would get us the information we need quickly so we can concentrate on being engineers. There is some set up and refining time to get things the way you want, but then it appears to be pretty straightforward. Support is excellent with BQ. The best I've seen. That's probably the biggest comment I can make. Any program this technical in nature will take some time to get set up the way you want it. Their support is fast and effective, and they solve your problem on the first try almost every time.

[01/03/2006]  As an Architect, I want to spend time designing and not accounting. I have just upgraded from BQ 2004 to 2005 and have found the 2005 version to be even easier to use than 2004. Be sure to run a good backup before you upgrade, there have been a few glitches with information moving from the 2004 to the 2005. Customer support has been very good at fixing the problems. They are always very patient and friendly when you call for assistance. I recommend buying the additional customer support package, because you will need assistance for a period longer that the 30 day trial period. The program does so many things that it takes a little longer than 30 days to be fluent with it. The integration with QuickBooks is fantastic.

[12/01/2005]  To Whom It May Concern: I am a solo-practice lawyer in a small town in Colorado. After working for some very large firms I decided to strike out on my own. One of the systems I had to have in place from the very beginning of my practice was a billing program. I reviewed a number of billing programs before settling on BQ. I even used a different program for a while before switching to BQ (complete disaster!).

What I like about BQ is that it gives me a great deal of control over the options that are important to me without the necessity of having a degree in computer software engineering. I also like the customer service that I received from BQ. On one occasion I suggested an enhancement to the program and BQ actually implemented the change in less than a few weeks after I first called them. If you call BQ customer service you might speak with Irfan (very good at explaining things in a way that a lawyer might actually understand) or Will Breiholz (the head of BQ). There are others on the BQ customer service team but those are the names I remember.

I also like how BQ integrates with QuickBooks. As a former bean counter it is important to me that the integration occur exactly the way that I want it to. No problem with BQ.

I wish you well and hope that your experience with BQ has been as rewarding as mine.

Good to Very Good...but not Great

[07/27/2005]  We have been installing BQ 2005 over the last 2 months for a 10-person consulting firm. BQ has many excellent features that make it perfect for us. We already use QuickBooks and the integration is essential. However, be prepared for a lot of work. So far, I have put in 40+ hours and our accounting manager has spent over 150 hours...and we're still not fully transitioned.

Also, don't count on BQE to create customized invoice templates. They are really reluctant to do this and it takes many weeks, which has further delayed the transition. Actually, QuickBooks is more flexible with invoice templates - but we can't successfully send the information back to QuickBooks to use our old invoice format.

Overall I would give this software a B-. I think it has a lot of potential, but doesn't fully live up to the promises made on the web site and by the sales people. You definitely need to use the 30-day trial period to completely evaluate its applicability to your own organization. On the plus side, you can call them as much as you want (and we did) during the 30-day trial.

A simpler solution to avoid big accounting programs

We tried other programs. They had the features that we needed but they were very complex and required a lot of setup and training time and expense.

This year we were delighted to find that we could purchase both QuickBooks and BQ for less that the annual renewal on the other program. This combination of software provides the features that we need, had almost no learning curve and is easy to use.

My employees were very impressed with the time keeping aspect of BQ and I am in love with the ease of getting bills out using BQ.

Makes QuickBooks useful for those with varied invoicings

[02/10/2005]  We perform professional services and make prototypes for the medical device industry and we need our invoices to be both professional and correct. We tried another accounting system for almost 2 years, but had problems finding people who could help us with the program and our accountancy was not familiar with it either.

So, after much soul-searching and detailed reviewing of competing products, we decided to return to QuickBooks, but only if we had another program take care of our billing and invoicing. We narrowed our choices down to a couple and after talking with all of them decided to try our luck with BQ.

The initial setup was a bit rocky, it took several calls to BQ and some detailed assistance from the computer person on our accountants staff (I should mention that everyone here pretty much has engineering backgrounds -- accounting is a foreign language). We discovered that, while it is not the easiest process, there are several work-arounds because of the way QuickBooks operates and BQ's phone help was quite helpful.

BQ is able to track everything, provide the proper markups for different categories, and provide us with an extra measure of cost control that we did not consider when we purchased the program. In addition we've discussed with them several ideas where we think the program could be improved and BQ responded quickly with improvements in the next update.

In summary, this is a very powerful and flexible addition to QuickBooks -- it makes QuickBooks work for us. BQ is also helping us track our costs more easily and quickly. We have multiple people entering time data and it is much easier to do and to manage. The drawbacks are probably that more examples could be included in the manuals, more flexibility in the invoice formats would be nice (it can be done, but it requires paying BQ or purchasing and learning Crystal Reports), and it lacks a tutorial that would show the basic operation. However these are all relatively minor as what it does it does very well. Finally one more drawback is not BQ's fault, but that QuickBooks does not allow sharing of some data and this makes it necessary for a kludgy workaround every now and then. We're hoping that the new release of QuickBooks improves that so BQ can do its job even better.

Overall we're quite pleased with what we got -- we'd recommend it to anyone whose company has contract that range from fixed, to retainer, and then to time and materials.

BQ 2004 Time and Billing is a wonderful solution for firms needing a multiple of billing options (hourly, progress based fees, hourly with caps, etc.) as well as offering flexible billing rates. BQ 2004 Time and Billing allows us to track our fee projects to determine profitability on a phase by phase basis. This program provides much more in-depth analysis for tracking multiple projects and can provide a good overall picture of financial health. This program is a wonderful tool to broaden services available on QuickBooks so that we don't have to change to a much more expensive and not as efficient accounting programs as our firm grows. Great product and service! Highly recommended!

We have found the "BQ" to be a very flexible time and billing software program and has been a perfect solution for our firm. We are networked and able to capture time and billing costs, efficiently, timely and accurately. As CPA's, we are able to analyze both engagements and staff in "real time", and find that we are benefiting both in terms of efficiency and the ability to bill more often rather than once a month. The process of billing is less of a chore and there is definitely more thought and analysis since "BQ" does the "crunching" for us. With the integration with QuickBooks, we feel that make "BQ" is a useful, worthwhile and efficient way to capture data related to billings, collections, etc. We are only constrained by the time requirements of servicing our clients that prevents us from using all of the features and "BQ", but, we're working towards using all of the solutions that "BQ" can provide. We are a very satisfied user of "BQ" and gladly would recommend it to other users.

However, I found it difficult to manage projects with varied terms (fixed price, hourly, and hourly not to exceed) and different rate sheets. I also wanted a workspace that could be completely open to my personnel for time and expense entry, project management, reporting work-in-progress and assessing account status. Accurately tracking and controlling time against project budgets is key to any successful engineering business. BQ 2004 provided just what we needed.

The cost for these products and the annual upgrades represented a substantial savings for our firm. Another side benefit is the ease of use was such that our front office assistant was able to do billing; requiring less time and expense from our accountanting staff. We kept MAS 90 on the shelf again for 2004 and will soon upgrade to the latest versions of BQ.

[10/10/2003]  We have looked at many billing products that integrated with QuickBooks as well as Stand alone. Our firm found BQ to be a great choose. Install and setup did not take a technical computer person. We have 11 staff members and we were install and up and running in one day. The Employee, Client and Project screens all have the same format as well as the time; expense screens are also similar to each other so the learning curve is very minimal. There are an endless number of reports that you can choose from as well as invoice and statement templates. You are not limited to the defaults and all are customizable. I would highly recommend BQ to anyone who makes there money selling their time.

BQ is flexible Time and Billing software, so flexible that it fits our business perfectly. We keep very detailed time cards and bill based on fixed fee, percent complete, hourly and recurring with cap. Our bill rates change with the nature of the job and BQ allows us to assign multiple rates to one or many employees based on the activities performed. Very critical features like these are missing in QuickBooks and that is why our firm has been using BQ for time cards, project management and invoicing and QuickBooks as our GL. Thanks to BQ-QuickBooks integration, many hours are saved every week, since we used to waste so much time with double entry.

[02/12/2003]  In our company we need to bill our time with different rates, and BQ does that very good. We cut the mistakes in our billing rates by 100%. Thanks to BQ we resolved the problems in our company in reference to the multiple customer contract rates. Now we are using QuickBooks and BQ completed integrated.

[01/22/2003]  I'm an Accountant that's run a small business on QuickBooks for almost 5 years now. Integration with BQ is probably the best thing that's happened to QuickBooks. It allows us to track time for the services that we offer our clients: Tax Prep, Bookkeeping and Audits. I can invoice each engagement in a variety of ways - T&M, Retainer, Flat Fee, etc. BQ reports have helped me keep on top of things. I've scheduled the WIP, Aging, Cash Receipts, Write UP/Down and Staff Performance reports to run automatically so that they appear in my email Inbox automatically every Monday morning. I highly recommend BQ.

[12/21/2002]  After diligent research into all time tracking products that integrate with QuickBooks, we found BQ to be the clear choice. It is easy to install and set up - we were up and running in a week. Time and expense recording is very straightforward, employees were able complete time cards and expense logs without training. Invoicing is fast and easy while still providing a lot of flexibility in billing methods and invoice formats. Some helpful bells and whistles like automatic detection of incomplete time sheets cuts down our overhead. The integration with QuickBooks is very thorough and automated. We are very impressed and highly recommend this product.

Easy to use, Flexible Time Billing Software

[12/11/2002]  We are an Architectural and Engineering firm of 30 employees. We've used QuickBooks Pro for several years now and have been satisfied with neither the time keeping nor the invoicing functionality provided. Since we didn't want to export data back and forth between a time billing software and QuickBooks, we were stuck recording Excel time sheets are typing up invoices in Word. We had looked at BQ a few years ago, and liked it, but without the QuickBooks integration we passed. We have been up and running in BQ for just over a month now and its already paid for itself. No more time slips through the cracks, invoices get out on time and the project management reports are great. So far so good, I recommend it to everyone that tracks time.

[12/11/2002]  Our business is consulting and so time billing is our lifeblood. We started using BQ two years ago and we've seen the accuracy and efficiency of our billing increase substantially. I believe BQ sells for $400-$500 per user and that is the best bargain we've ever found in our office operations. BQ is making us money because we are able to track our time more accurately and present better reports to our clients, which gets us paid. I would HIGHLY recommend BQ to anyone who makes their money by billing for their time.
